Johannesburg Art Gallery - Review
The fifteen exhibition halls here host a vast collection of classical art, chiefly from Scotland, Britain and other European countries, along with a lot of South Africa’s cultural heritage. Pablo Picasso, Auguste Rodin, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro are among the greats showcased here. The collection also includes some South African giants, namely Gerard Sekoto, Alexis Preller, Walter Battiss, and many other regional artists. If that wasn’t enough, the contemporary arts housed here and the cultural gardens here make the trip worthwhile all by themselves.

Johannesburg Art Gallery, Johannesburg Reviews
Went for a visit this morning, and would be challenged in recommending this museum. The building is not maintained, the exhibits were minimal - especially when we thought their holdings were strong. At one time, the Art Deco design may have been beautiful but that time has passed. I am surprised by the other reviews for the JAG because their experiences were not mine. It seemed as though the JAG has given up. Cannot recommend.
Beautiful building with architecture that leaves one in awe. I’ve been coming here at least 2 times a year for the last 7 to 10 years and am always struck by how magical the place is. The collections are often well curated but can be scant at times when they lend out pieces that are part of their key collection (William Kentridge, Sekoto as was the case this July of 2018). I was even more surprised today by how beautiful Joubert Park actually is when you’re able to see beyond the grime. Definitely worth a visit.
So impressed with our trip to the Johannesburg Art Gallery! All the recent renovations and maintenance to the Gallery has defiantly kept it the Historical Gallery one wants to visit! Beautiful art works on Display dating back all the way to the 1600's. Staff really went out their way to make sure our visit to JAG was enjoyed! Thank you JAG!
A great place but in serious need of repairs.
The Johannesburg Art Gallery is Joburg’s oldest art museum. The beautiful Lutyens building is worth a visit, as is the varied collection. The collection spans from the early Modern collection curated by Sir Hugh Lane in the beginning of the 20th century, to ancient Chinese ceramics, a scholar’s collection of early lace, many modern and contemporary South African works of art and a breath taking collection of African Head rests. There are rotating contemporary art exhibitions at the gallery. There is no coffee shop here, but there is a gift shop with some beautiful objects. Taking a taxi that is prepared to wait outside for your return from viewing is a good idea for tourists. Driving there alone only recommended to those comfortable and familiar with driving in Johannesburg city, but definitely make a plan to go see the gallery as it shouldn’t be missed.
