Nimes Cathedral is a popular 17th century Roman Catholic Church that has been dedicated to Virgin Mary and to Castor of Apt who’s the local saint. It is believed that the Cathedral stands on the former temple Augustus’ site. It is partly Gothic and partly Romanesque in style and the architecture is truly worth admiring. Until the year 1877, the Church was the seat of the Nimes’ bishops when the diocese’s name was changed. Even today, it is the seat of the successors of Bishops of Nimes. The Church might be small, but its historical significance, the peaceful aura, and the admirable architecture make it worth visiting on your trip to Nimes.
