The Ohau Waterfall is a little distance away from the main town on the highway. This absolutely gorgeous place can be reached through a short and non-labor intensive walk and is a complete delight.

The waterfall is frequent home to incredibly adorable seal pups but if you go around October to February (Summer) you won’t be able to see them. But even without them, this attraction is certainly worth visiting.

Set amidst a verdant and beautiful forest, this gorgeous waterfall is a great place to plan a day trip to. You can take a picnic to the place and enjoy a great meal amidst nature. Winter or summer, this place is a must visit in Kaikoura.

If you are going in winter, the Ohau Waterfall offers up a real treat. Seal Pups come here to enjoy the little stream that are a truly lovely sight.

  • One of the Highlights of New Zealand.... Though I hear it might be gone due to earthquakes... Baby seals head inland to a waterfall where they live till their old enough to head out to sea... Very Cool. Spent half the day hanging out with these little guys. Free and definitely worth a visit.

  • A perfect location for seal pups. The walkway is best visited in the colder months. Its a very short walk and certainly worth the stop! Playful seal pups abound.. please respect them and their environment for them to continue living in this beautiful space.

  • The Seals were so cute, they were from the start all the way to the waterfall and so close you could almost touch them.

  • Good place to watch new born seals playing near the fall, but check schedule for the population of seals. Visited twice, July has many of them, Nov has two only

  • Magical place! You can see small seals playing in the waterfall. So wonderful.
