Greg did a great job as our guide! This is am experience of a life time and yes it is a good chunk of change but you will see the sunset above the clouds and do some great stargazing if the weather is good. Food was good but don't expect fancy. Overall well worth it and a great experience!
It was a great experience, beginning to end. Justin did an excellent job being an informative guide, and the view from the summit is absolutely breath taking. I would advise planning on going during a new moon however, the full moon made it a bit more difficult to see the stars.
Amazing tour with great guides. Greg and Art were terrific guides, offering a ton of information about the big island and Mauna Kea itself. Viewing the stars was amazing where we got to see Jupiter, Saturn, star clusters and galaxies. Make sure to wear pants! It may be warm by the beach but it's very cold on the top!
We learned so much from this trip and enjoyed every minute! Maka, our guide, was very knowledgeable and always looked out for us. He seemed to truly want us to have the best experience possible. We had a fun drive in a comfortable van to Mauna Kea, stopped for dinner (veggie lasagna & brownie) at the Visitor Center to acclimate and then went up to the summit for the sunset. After that gorgeous view, we drove down a few thousand feet where Maka and Greg set up telescopes for us to see the stars. They pointed out constellations and explained what we were seeing. An added extra was being able to see the Kilauea lava pool burning bright red in the distance. The moon also came up and shown on the clouds below us. It really was a once in a lifetime experience. Don't miss it!
This was a great tour and a good value for the money. We were picked up in Kona around 2:30 and made it to the visitor's center 4:30. We spent an hour there having a lasagna dinner and letting our bodies adjust to the altitude. We then drove the last bit up the mountain arriving about a 30 minutes before sunset. After sunset we drove down to a lower elevation and stargazed with a very nice telescope. We returned to Kona around 11pm. It makes for a long day, but definitely worth it. Our guide, Blake, was very knowledgeable and you could tell he enjoyed his job, which made the tour even better.
