Mountain Thunder Coffee Plantation, Kailua-kona Reviews
Aloha spirit and the true meaning starts before you even get to the plantation. The ride just to get there(which is a quick ten to twelve minutes from the airport) takes your breath away. You immediately start relaxing and enjoying the beauty of Hawaii. Indigenous plants, orchids by the hundreds and lush foliage throughout. Free tours of an expansive 20 acre coffee plantation and once there, if you had the choice, you would spend the rest of your vacation just roaming around! Great experience for the whole family. Staff is amazing. Coffee and tea tasting with the ability to move through the gift shop at your leisure. Sits 3200 feet above sea level so you can imagine the ocean views. An absolute don't miss for any visitors and frankly local alike. My family and I will definitely be back! Gem.
The free tour is fantastic and tells about coffee processing. Prices of coffee are steep, but reflects the quality and care put into processing. There is also a self-guided tour in addition that is rather cheap and takes your party through a nature trail and the coffee plantation. It is beautiful.
A wonderful experience, if you pause and listen to your soul. My arrival was greeted by heavenly experiences. The first, a hazy view of coffee trees; a cool breeze moving the smell of wet dirt and a smile from a lovely lady with hair like crowes falling down her face. Although we were there only for the coffee I could not help but remember my younger years and spend some time taking in the whispers from all my sense: the cool air, the smell of fresh coffee, and the view of paradise. How luck you are. I hope to see you soon. Thank you for the experience and the wonderful coffee, you were on my mind today when I brewed a fresh cup of "black and tan". :)
It was great! We had a private in-depth tour of the growing and maintaining of the coffee plants-- we learned about the different varieties of coffee and the different animals on the farm. Afterwards, our tour guide took us through the roasting process. She explained the steps to get from the "cherry" to the light, medium and dark roasted beans (and of course all the differences between the roasts). After sampling the many different types of coffee, we were then able to roast our own beans to our liking, personalize a label and ultimately package our own bags of organic coffee beans. I highly recommend this tour if you're interested in coffee!
Great little tour and tastings up in the hills. If you're looking for a tour of the grove, that's probably the paid tour. The free one is of the factory itself but still interesting.
