Ocean Rider Seahorse Farm, Kailua-kona Reviews

  • Interesting tour of their commercial seahorse farm with very knowledgeable tour guides. All horses are sold commercially to fish tank owners and pet shops in order to reduce demand from ocean sourced wild seahorses, which is a great mission. The tour guide said none are used to establish seahorse colonies in the wild. The tour is a good time with one caveat... The $45 entry fee for an educational tour is wildly overpriced. We did many other island tours that were even more interesting and cost a LOT less. We learned a lot, but just felt it was overpriced. I was tempted to justify the high free as partially a donation, but since this is a for-profit commercial operation selling to fish tank owners and pet shops, that would not be the right way to look at it.

  • I called for directions. The woman gave such poor directions I arrived at the end of the tour. I asked for a discount so my grandson could see the seahorses after all that time in the car and was told no. I had to stop 2x at an abalone growing office to ask for directions because there is no street sign that says seahorse. They said lots of people stop to ask. I got no apology and no discount. If you go, make sure you get detailed directions.

  • What a great experience! Seeing seahorses of different ages, holding one, feeding them little shrimps, and eating sea weed myself. Tour guide was knowledgeable and the gift shop rocked. It's a special experience for adults and children alike.

  • It's cool seeing this even though it's very expensive at 40 dollars. I goes to a good cause and where else in the world will you see something like this. The tour is neat and you see the entire process in action. You see the babies, the mates, and adults as well as hold a seahorse. The cost. For shipping a pair and a two week class for handling is approximately 300 dollars.

  • Very informative and the seahorses are just darling. A bit pricey at $45 per person but it is a non profit. Out of the way but Google maps got us there no problem.
