In the heart of the town is the statue of the late Dal Bahadur Giri, who was a local freedom fighter and Gandhian. After the establishment of the political party in Kalimpong, he led the freedom movement in the city. He was arrested multiple times for opposing the British government. A loyal supporter of Gandhiji, he died at the age of 36. On his demise, Gandhiji sent a letter to his family as a condolence, where Gandhiji mentioned Giri as the brave son of the soil. He used to be called as “the Gandhi of the Hills”. His statue was constructed at Thaney Dara and was inaugurated by the secretary of Freedom Fighter Federation Daljit Sen. The country remembers all its all its freedom fighters on Republic Day and Independence Day.
