The large Bronze sculpture in the city center of Bonn, called the Beethoven-denkmal, was unveiled in 1845 to commemorate the birthplace of the eminent composer Ludwig Van Beethoven. This 19th century monument serves as a popular landmark of the city at the Bonn Cathedral Square. It was created by Ernst Hahnel and was executed by Daniel Burgschmiet. The highlights of the Beethoven-denkmal are the pedestal stones bearing the allegorical depictions of Beethoven’s music. The “phantasy” relief on the front of the sculpture features the Greek Sphinx having woman’s face and bust and body of a lion which is steered by a muse playing lyre.
