The Udaygiri fort is another relic from the Travancore kingdom in Tamil Nadu. This isolated fort used to be a mighty ammunition storage site for the army during the reign of Marthanda Varma. The strategic importance of the fort makes it a popular tourist destination.
This fort like the Vattakottai was constructed in granite and has hence braved the elements through the years. The interesting thing about this fort is the recently discovered tunnel that was perhaps an escape path from under the fort.
The area around it is a rich and dense protected forest and it will soon be converted into a bio-diversity park. The fort however will remain under the jurisdiction of the Archeological survey. The fort has thus become important from the historic as well as ecological standpoint. Also, visit the popular attractions in the city by following Kanyakumari itinerary 1 day.
