Durlach, first mentioned as a city in 1196, is a borough of the German city of Karlsruhe with a population of roughly 30,000. Durlach holds significant importance on the historical timeline of Germany. Emperor Fredrick II on the margrave Hermann V of Zähringen as an allodial possession bestowed it. It has served as a seat of the Liberal party of the Baden parliament in 1846 and witnessed the encounter between Prussians and the insurgents in 1849. Once a home to several traditional industries producing sewing machines, beer, tobacco and chemicals is now a popular tourist destination for people travelling to Karlsruhe. Durlach is gifted with astounding natural beauty and impressive architecture; the oldest running funicular railway network is a delight to experience and is highly recommended. Highlights and must sees include:

  • Karlsburg castle
