Inaugurated in 1814, The Church of St. Stephan is the oldest Catholic Church in Karlsruhe. Grand duke Karl Friedrich had founded the place in Erbprinzenstraße for Catholics in Karlsruhe and dedicated the Church to the princess Stephanie, an adopted daughter of Napoleon, naming the church after St. Stephen. This classical sacred building’s architecture is dominated by unplastered façade which being Weinbrenner’s major works is considered to be the most important neoclassical domed churches of southwest Germany. Inside the tower there is a church bell with Christmas motif that was saved in WWII after the air raids ended up destroying the church buildings partly. Since then the Church of St. Stephen has undergone several restorations and reconstructions. Highlights and must see includes 'The Organ'.

  • Als Teil des Karlsruher Gesamtwerks von Friedrich Weinbrenner durchaus sehenswert. Leider sind seit dem Wiederaufbau nach der Zerstörung 1944 nur noch der Grundriss und wenige architektonischen Elemente erhalten. Die Athmosphere im Inneren ist eine gänzlich andere. Die Umgestaltung des Innenraums 2011 hat noch einmal einiges dazu beigetragen. Die Bänke sind fast kreisförmig um den Altar angeordnet, so dass sich die Gemeide nun nichtmehr gemeinsam in eine Richtung ausrichtet, sondern sich teilweise gegenüber sitzt.
