The Kastamonu Castle has an extensive history of rulers written on its walls. From Byzantine Empire to Selijuks, Candarids, the Ottoman Empire and even through the Turkish Republic era- the castle has formed the backdrop for iconic moments in Turkey’s evolution. The castle is located on a 112-metre high hill and is one of the best places to see Kastamonu’s skyline.
The original design of the castle included massive fortification around the current structure. However, today you can see only the inner castle that was restored in the Candarid era. You can see 15 bastions that were used for defence and a secret passage that connected the inner castle to its outer periphery. The passage was used as a refuge in case of a siege and also to transport goods to the castle.
Walk the pathways around the castle and you see the fabulous view of Kastamonu surrounded by undulating hills. The cannons look like they are ready to fire while the sheer gorgeous stone and mortar architecture of the fort itself, spins a spellbinding story. Did you know the interiors of the castle are supported by timber beams and 15 towers? In spite of its minimal support, the castle is still one of the best preserved structures around the city. Don’t forget to carry a camera to click some fabulous panoramic views from here.
