The Mahmut Bey Mosque dates back to 1366 and is one of the most unique buildings in not just Kastamonu but in the whole country. The whole mosque is built without using any cementing material and metal. This gave the mosque the title of ‘the mosque without nails’ and with the whole interior of the building built in wood, it is a marvel that the structure still stands strong amidst the city’s current skyline.

The exterior hewn stone structure is what gives the mosque its impeccable support and the exclusive ‘Kalem isi’ work hand drawn onto the wooden interiors, makes a visit here nothing short of breath-taking. Notice the colourful dyes that were used that still adorn the wooden furnishing and the gorgeous roof. All the dyes used were plant based and the replica of the portal (original of which is kept at the city museum), takes the centre stage at the mosque. The whole place reminisces of its brilliant history and with a construction that has shaken the minds of the modern architects, a visit here is an absolute must!
