Mount Rushmore National Memorial & Presidential Trail, Keystone Reviews
We went up after meetings were done for the day. We got there at about 7:45pm. It was dark and the mountain wasn't lit up. I was a little concerns that my friend who had never seen Mt. Rushmore was going to miss out. What we found out was a program starting at 8pm. The program was worth sitting in 40 degree cool of the night. Many were smart to have warm coats. Our jackets left something to be desired. If your ever in Rapid City. The short trip is a must.
Went there as part of a tour, so had less than 2 hours. U need at least 2. Awe inspiring. Films and exhibits very informative and interesting. Charge only for parking, $10, I think. Very much worth the trip. We stayed in Keystone, only 2 miles down the mountain from Rushmore. Great scenery and lots to see in the area.
The most spectacular "Rock sculpture" you can imagine. And, just 15-20 miles from beautiful "Mount Rushmore" is a new beginning of another sculpture that is " Crazy Horse Memorial" which is currently a work in progress. This a trip worth every penny it takes to drive to both of these memorials. They are absolutely breathtaking and both well deserved memorials, especially "Crazy Horse Memorial". Once you visit both of those sites you'll forever be grateful and have a memory you'll never forget. A must visit place. I've been there twice and each visit just gets better.
I viewed a movie when I was9 or 10 years old call "North by Northwest" and the monument was in the movie. As a child on welfare it was not a place I ever thought I'd have an opportunity to see in person. But I did and it was a very emotional experience. I visited in September. Call in advance to check the weather. I did and was prepared because I took my down coat with me. Thanks to having lived in Vermont I know it gets cold up north. Days were warm nights cold. Not cool, cold. The monument has a lighting ceremony each night after dark. It is cold but wonderful. I was nice and toasty in my coat. Others were dressed in shorts sandals and t-shirts. It is worth it even if you're cold but more enjoyable if you are physically comfortable. I hope everyone can see it in person.
So the presidents heads are actually pretty big. I was expecting them to be smaller because so many people have said that they look so much smaller in person but it is definitely a marvel to see. Our free tour guide was so amazing and friendly and talked all about Mount Rushmore’s history. You definitely are so captivated when you are there. It is definitely a site every American should see!
