The Nyamata Church is located 30 kilometers south of Kigali and is a genocide memorial where some 50,000 people died during the Rwandan genocide in 1994. In April 1994, many Tutsi people gathered in the church here as the church was considered a safe place. The perpetrators then made holes in the wall to throw in the grenades. Thousands of people were killed by being shot and with machetes. The remains of 50,000 people are buried here.
