Among Port Royal’s five original forts, Fort Charles is the only one that survived the 1692 earthquake, although it did sink 1m. Jamaica’s latitude and longitude are measured from the flagstaff of Fort Charles.

At the height of its glory, the fort was protected by 104 guns. Many cannons still point out from  the structure and are visible today. In the centre of the courtyard lies the Maritime Museum  with an impressive display of objects recovered from the sunken city, including glassware, pottery and weapons. There is also on display a model of the Jamaica Producer cargo ship.

A British naval hero, Horatio Nelson was stationed here for 30 months and there is a restored raised platform behind the museum known as Nelson’s Quarterdeck. A plaque on the wall of the King’s Battery, to the right of the main entrance of the museum, commemorates his time here.

The fort and the Maritime Museum are an interesting sight for those interested in Naval history and entry to the museum includes a guided tour.
