Spread over 200 acres of land, Hope Gardens is the largest botanical gardens in the Caribbean. The land was originally part of the "Hope Estate", which was owned and run by Richard Hope who was a commander in the British army and was gifted the estates a reward for helping Britain gain control of Jamaica from the Spanish.
One of the high points in the history of Hope Gardens was a visit from Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. Following this visit, the Queen gave her permission for the garden to officially change its name to the "Royal Botanical Gardens Hope."
The Gardens are beautifully manicured and are home to several tropical flowers and plants. There is also a cactus garden, an orchid house, a bougainvillea walk, an ornamental pond and several fountains and green houses.
Adjoining the Hope Botanical Gardens is the Hope Zoo, which has many animals from several parts of the world. Hope Zoo's most popular sight is male lion called Lucas. There are also several parrots and other tropical birds worth seeing. Current exhibits also include zebras, crocodiles, monkeys, deer, and more.
There is a vegetarian restaurant in the park called the Ashanti Oasis Ital Restaurant, which serves food according to the diktats of the Rastafarian religion having no meat or salt. There are also free concerts held on most Sundays at the Shell Bandstand in the park.
The gardens are maintained by the Ministry of Agriculture's Public Gardens Division and have undergone some major restoration since 1996.
