The National Gallery of Jamaica was established in 1974, is the oldest and largest public art museum on the island. It has an extensive collection of early, modern and contemporary art from Jamaica and the rest of the world. Most of the collection is on permanent view.

The NGJ also showcases work by major Jamaican artists, holds thematic exhibitions, guest-curated exhibitions, touring exhibitions that originate outside of the island, and the premier national exhibition, the National Biennial.

The core of the permanent collection is presented on the 1st floor in 10 galleries, organized in chronological order from 1922 to the present. There is a vast collection of sculptures by Edna Manley, landscapes by John Dunkley, portraits by Albert Huie, village scenes by David Pottinger, abstract religious works by Carl Abrahams, surrealist works by Collin Garland and unique collections of paintings and African- style sculptures by artist and bishop Mallica ‘Kapo’ Reynolds. There are also several pieces of Taino carvings and colonial-era art.

The Gallery offers a range of educational services, including guided tours, lectures and panel discussions, and children’s art programmes, which are popular among tourists, art enthusiasts and locals.

 There is also a coffee shop and gift shop on the premises where you can buy reproductions and posters of some of the exhibited artwork.

• The Gallery is also occasionally open on Sundays and evenings for exhibition openings and special programmes.
• Most special events are free. Some of the children’s programmes attract a nominal fee.
• Admission, tours and children’s activities are free on Last Sundays, some special programmes such as film screenings, may however attract a fee.
• Donations can be placed in the donations box in the reception area and help to support NGJ exhibitions and programs.
• Food and drinks are not allowed in the galleries however, refreshments can be bought and consumed in the coffee shop.
• Large bags and backpacks are not allowed inside and must be left with the security desk.

• Adults- JMD 400 (effective January 10, 2012).
• Senior Citizens and Teachers accompanying student groups:  JMD 200 (effective January 10, 2012).
• Children and Students with ID: free.
• Guided tours: JMD 3,000 (general); JMD 2,000 (schools) – by appointment only.
