Situated on the east side of ko pha Ngan, Than Sadet National Park is known for its waterfall. Known as the royal river, the area restores the engravings of several Thai kings who have visited this place. Although the place is quite difficult to reach due to its rough terrain, yet the water of the waterfall offers a rejuvenating experience, especially to those who swim in it. The history of the park goes back to 1888 when King Rama V fell in love with Than Sadet and visited a total of 10 times to the area. On one of his visits he carved his initials into a rock near the waterfall. In doing this he set a precedent that was followed by Rama VII and the present King, Rama IX. The stone with three royal signatures is now an important tourist attraction, particularly for Thai people. Located near Haad Than Sadet beach, the waterfall covers a 3 kilometer course. There are a few large pools along the waterfall’s path that are suitable for sitting in. The best time to visit Than Sadet waterfall is between May and October when there is more rain.
