Every great city eventually produces its own favorite local artist. Ryohei Koiso was Kobe's and when he passed away in December 1988; his family donated most of his work - prints, oil paintings and sketches - to the city. Thematically, most of the works do focus on the city itself. Furthermore, they stand out for their distinctly Western influence, rather than Japanese. In the museum's garden, the artist's original studio has been fully restored. Programs about the artists are regularly screened in the movie theater.

• Closed on Mondays (unless it's a National holiday, in which case it's closed on the next day.)
• Friday special exhibitions: 10am-6pm.
