Marionette clocks, seasonal flowers and cherry blossom trees may seem like an unusual combination at a Buddhist temple, but it works. Built in 886 AD on the commission of Emperor Koko, the temple is the main temple of the Sumadera Sect of Shingon Buddhism. Depicted on the temple grounds are the scenes from an iconic battle fought in 1184 - the Battle of Ichi-no-Tani, in which AtsumoriTaira was killed by NaozaneKumagai. The statues of these combatants decorate the temple.
