About Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, Koblenz

The fortress looks over the Rhine and Koblenz from a hill. Its fame is due more to its role as an important cultural centre rather than any architectural beauty. Here you’ll find several museums:

  • Haus der Fotografie (photography)
  • Haus der Archaologie (archaeology)– explores Koblenz’s archaeological history.
  • Landesmuseum Koblenz (temporary exhibitions)
  • Haus des Genusses
  • Three Historical Gardens on the roof– Stone Age, Roman and Modern

If you book a guided tour of the fort, you’ll be lucky enough to be shown around by an actor who’ll adopt a historical persona for your amusement.

Check out Cafe Hahn GmbH for some excellent Prussian cuisine at the fortress. The fortress is also the location for the Koblenz Youth Hostel– if you can, stay there. It has a great view of the city.

Hands down the best way to get to the fortress is by cable car– a 900 metre ride that crosses the Upper Middle Rhine Valley and offers splendid panoramas as it soars above the river.

  • After 6pm it's free entry. The castle has a relaxing vibe. Mind you when we went it was not busy. The surrounding cafes and restaurants are also great place to eat.

  • Very nice Old fortress with plenty of history from the middle ages to WWI. You can access the fortress by car or with the gondola. I recommended the gondola for the beautifull view of the Rhine river. Inside the fortress there is plenty of Museums and also temporary exhibitions. There is a cosy wine Bar where you can try the Riesling wine made in the area. Sometimes there is a handcraft market inside where you can find Hand made soap, mustard, spices, honey, Apple Juice etc.

  • Plan your trip here. Visit in late afternoon, check out museums and then stay to see the sunset. The place is magical at night.

  • Worth a visit, but could be more on show. Offers amazing views of Koblenz.

  • It is a very historic place, but what is very strange and creepy is the way you get there: steps in the woods, than steps in a kind of tunnel, very bad illuminated!! I was just waiting for a ghost or a thief jumping in the next corner! It was 4pm when I was getting there and there was no staff to be seen!! Creepy, creepy and creepy!!! 😰👻👻
