The Roman Catholic Basilica of Santa Cruz is a colossal cathedral with a dominant Gothic presence in the form of a facade flanked by two huge towers.

At the top of the main altar is a striking painting of the ‘Last Supper’, modelled on the renowned work of Leonardo da Vinci. The stained glass windows and intricate wall carvings add to the charm and grandeur of the place. The church dates back to 1600 although it has gone through other renovations through the years. There are still active services at the church.

  • A very nice and calm place. Well located with lot of places within the vicinity and is in walking length from the beach. The place stays open in the afternoon and in evening only, so check before you go. And yes, it closes early by 12:30 I guess on Sundays. A very old place in Kochi, and a must visit during Christmas and Annual festival. Parking is not a challenge and neither is nearby options for food and catch up.

  • A Portuguese established gothic style cathedral of 1505 is one among the 8 Basilicas in Kerala. Also the first cathedral in Asia. Spared by the Dutch who destroyed every catholic building. It was converted it into an arms storehouse. The British who came in later demolished it and then 100 years later , in 1886 the present day Santa Cruz Basilica¬†was built. The artistic dignity within the majestic edifice of this Latin Catholic Church is stunning. Participating in the celebration of the Holy Mass at Santa Cruz Basilica is an emotional and spiritual necessity of every local Christian. Entrance is free.

  • Nice structure, had to enjoy from outside. They have a noon break where they keep it closed, not usual in any churches. Had to visit once again to see the paintings and altar. Vehicles need to be parked outside in the road.

  • Beautiful church with old architecture Still maintaining its beauty The church is situated at a good location. A very peaceful atmosphere Both English and Malayalam service They used to have Latin mass. But not anymore

  • It's a European church, but much smaller in scale and grandeur. Having said that, there are very few churches in India that have a European feel. Worth a visit.
