The Elephant Sanctuary or the Kodanad Elephant Training Centre in Abhayaranyam is one of the largest of its kind in Kerala and is a paradise for animal lovers. Located near the southern banks of Periyar River, the Elephant Sanctuary offers a natural habitat for the majestic elephants amid the mountainous forests. Under the surveillance of the Mahouts, you can bathe and massage the baby and adult elephants in the river in the early morning. Take an elephant safari at the main park to watch other elephants feed and roam about in the area. The most heart-melting experience here is seeing the baby elephants grow and get trained for interaction with the human beings, timber loading and also for performing at the religious festivals.
