General Post Office, Kolkata Reviews

  • Indian Postal system is going down hill. With the passage of time the services rendered by the post office should have improved. But unfortunately the reversed has happened. Instead of improving the skills of its employees, a kind of decay , a rot has set in the whole postal system. The Postal department has become one of the most corrupt department of the government. The postal employees should be sensitive to their customers. But in reality the postal employees are very rude and arrogant. There is no work culture worth mentioning. The bottom line is the situation is really very grim and sad.

  • Its on of the Iconic heritage building, the head office of postal service in west bengal. The post-office handles most of the city's inbound and outbound mail and parcels. Situated in the B. B. D. Bagh area. International Speed Post is available. Their service is also very fast. They didn't accept single parcel to post. they required only in large numbers. For single parcel you have to wait till the next counter open at 10.30am.

  • The site where the GPO is located was actually the site of the first Fort William. An alley beside the post office was the site of the guardhouse that housed the infamous 1756 Black Hole of Calcutta (1756). The General Post Office was designed in 1864 by Walter B. Grenville (1819-1874), who acted as consulting architect to the government of India from 1863 to 1868. The staircase at the eastern side of the GPO features a brass plate, which marks the eastern end of the Old Fort William. This is probably the only remaining of the ancient fort of Calcutta. Recently a marble plaque has been installed on the Eastern walls of GPO, which highlight the Brass Plate.
