St. John's Church, Kolkata Reviews
An old Church in the heart of central Calcutta founded by the British Empire during their occupation. The Church holds memories and a lot of history from during that time. Lovely Western architecture and remains fills the place with unique experience. A must for all kinds of travellers who have interest in this city's history and background.
The only church in Kolkata which exudes old world flavour. Has d most perfectly spiritual atmosphere at Christmas. Played d organ once... reminded of classical western music. Hope it preserves its charm
Very well maintained church. I had visited this place in April 2017 and I liked this place for it's cleanliness and beauty. This place is a holy place for all of us. We should also contribute this place by keeping this place environment clean. Happy visiting to this place.
St. John's Church was originally a cathedral...was among the first public buildings erected by the East India Company... Construction of the St. John's Church started in 1784...with Rs 30,000 raised through a public lottery and was completed in 1787... The land for the St. John's Church was donated by the Maharaja Nabo Kishen Bahadur the founder of the Shovabazar RajFamily... The foundation stone was laid by Warren Hastings, the Governor General of India on 6 April 1784... Built by architect James Agg the St John's church is built with a combination of brick and stone and was commonly known as the "Pathure Girja" (Stone Church)...the stones came from the medieval ruins of Gour...it is said that the ruins of Gaur were robbed to build St John's church... A stone spire 174 ft tall is its most distinctive feature...the spire holds a giant clock, which is wound every day... At the Northern Side of the Church there is a memorial (grave) of Lady Canning... Very well maintained Church complex...though photography inside the Church Altar is not allowed without permission...
The Pipe organ is particularly unique feature of this church u can find the playing music on you tube .The church site takes you back in history. The memorial of Black hole incident was shifted from Williams fort to St John's Cathedral. The displays from bible tell their own story.
