St. John's Church - Review

Known for its beautiful architecture, and quintessential colonial style design, St. John’s Church remind us of time when British rule was prominent here. Built in 1787, the church has been reinstated with stone columns and portraits that will just leave you awe-inspired. To back the breathtaking architecture, there is a lovely premises decked with greens and monuments. Lush surrounding, large statues and quiet ambience makes coming here such a bliss for everyone. The place is also home to the mesmerising ‘Last Supper’ painting drew by artist Johann Zoffany along with memorials of those who served here for the time. For anyone who is interested in the history, this is a must place to visit.

Just be careful of mosquitoes.Best to visit on a sunny day.

  • It is the third oldest church in Calcutta.Located at the Northwestern corner of Raj Bhavan it is an Anglican Church. It is a protected monument by the ASI.The foundation stone was lead by Warren Hastings, the Governor General of India back in 1784.The church has been built with a combination of brick and stone.Stone was brought from the medieval remains of Gour down the Hoogly river(basically stolen from Gour). The most prominent feature of this church is a stone spire which holds a giant clock. The clock is wound everyday. It is popularly known as 'Pathure Girja'. The interior is also very beautiful. They have famous painting-The Last Supper by Johhan Joffany. The floor has beautiful grey-blue marble from Gour. The coloured glass windows filter the sunlight. It has a pretty large area and it is bound to provide peace to anyone visiting it.

  • St. John's Church, originally a cathedral, was among the first public buildings erected by the East India Company after Kolkata (Calcutta) became the effective capital of British India. It is located at the North-Western corner of Raj Bhavan, and served as the Anglican Cathedral of Calcutta till 1847, when the see was transferred to St. Paul's Cathedral. Construction of the building, modelled on St Martin-in-the-Fields of London, started in 1784, with Rs 30,000 raised through a public lottery, and was completed in 1787. It is the third oldest church in the city, next to the Armenian and the Old Mission Church.

  • Its is one of the biggest church in West Bengal and also in Kolkata after St. Paul's Church recently I went their when I went to High court that time I meet with Father Nanda he is a very good person then i did prayers they have very big prayers hall where i did prayer to God Jesus then after than that i saw the full church it is one of the beautiful church i ever sees now how you can go their you can go their by metro for that you have to get down in ESPLANADE metro from their walking distance also you can go by bus, taxi, ola or uber

  • Beautiful design and ambience of this holy place. More importantly, this Church is famous for its plaques, and you wouldn't find a wall here that doesn't have a history pouring out. Just to name a few, The White Mughal (Lt. Col. James A. Kirkpatrick’s love affair with a Begum from Hyderabad), The Two Brothers (who came back from the Great War alive), The James Pattle (who hated Indians & wanted to be buried in England, but the ship carrying his body sanj in Indian waters!)
