Overview of Planty Park
Twenty one thousand square meters of parkland stretch in a narrow band between of Krakow Old Town and the rest of the city. Circling Old Town, it’s about 3 kilometres long. The park used to be site of the castle moats, which were filled up. Inside, you’ll find the usual city park fare - many smaller gardens, flowers, fountains, pretty lamp-posts, monuments, and ponds. Pretty trees cast their shade over these, making the park a cool retreat from the city bustle. Couples are a common sight in the evenings, serenaded by street musicians. Some of the sights to watch out for on your walk include:
- The Wavel Garden
- A 17th-century Carmelite monastery that was once a prison.
- The Krakow Barbican
- St. Florian's Gate
- The Franciscan Church
- The University Garden
- Bunkier Sztuki Art Gallery and Bar
- The 19th-century Post Office
- Chopin's Piano Water Fountain, a lovely and unusual looking sculpture on the western arc of the park.
Technically the whole walk should take only an hours, but feel free to lose yourself in the cute cafes and the flowering gardens.
