Admire the monumental beauty of the statue of Catherine the Great, with lute-strumming Cossacks and Potemkin at her heels in Krasnodar. The monument celebrates the empress and her grant of the Kuban area, together with the newly founded city, to the Cossacks. The city of Krasnodar was earlier known as Yekaterinodar, or Catherine's Gift. The name stood until the Communist Revolution, when it was changed and the monument was taken down. The statue is now fully restored and highlights the image of Catherine on a marble pillar, presenting the gift charter to the Cossacks.
