Dating back to the 11th century during the Bayon period, the Wat Ek Phnom is nestled amidst old Bodhi trees and is popular for a white-stone statue of Buddha. The beautiful modern pagoda built here is a sight to behold but the old temple is the heart of the place.

The temple was built with sandstone and laterite and stands on a platform that is around 52 meters by 49 meters. Today, only the main towers of the temples are seen but you can find ancient bass-reliefs here that depict mythological events of Lord Krishna. The lintel with the pediment is a rare archaeological feature and along with the 198 Bodhi trees, the place does depict how culture, religion, mythology, architecture, nature, and art are all a part of a bigger picture that shows a glimpse of its time.

Even though in ruins, the temple is still the focal point of holidays and festivals celebrated in Battambang while on other days, it is perfect for a sunny walk or for a small picnic.
