Constructed in 1879, Fort Margherita is a structure designed in the English style and overlooks the Sarawak River. It was built by the Rajah of Sarawak, Charles Brooke, in the memory of his wife Margaret Alice. The fort served as an important checkpoint for guarding the river. It has several battlements which made it easy to keep an eye on the river and the surrounding land as well. This fort was actively used as a guardian point till the Second World War. Today, it serves as a police training barracks and a tourist spot. Recently, an art gallery has opened in the premises of the fort. It displays some of the historic artworks found in Malaysia that have been painstakingly preserved.
