Located in the lush-green valley of Nallamala hills close to Srisailam, Phaladhara Panchadhara translates to ‘a river that flows from the Lord’s forehead’ and is believed to depict the five aspects of Lord Shiva (panch- five, dhara- stream).
This particular steam flows all year long and joins the holy Krishna river and even though considered to be only a small stop during your stay in the city, its rich history cannot be ignored. It is believed that this was the very place where Bhagavan Adisankara wrote and composed the Sivanandalahari- a devotional hymn dedicated to Lord Shiva that is believed to date back to the 8th century! The place can be reached by climbing a series of 160 steps and as you hike around, you can distinctly hear the calming sounds of the stream flowing through the thick forest. There is something magical about the place- the raw and rustic forest, the dirt roads, the greenery and the fact that this stream is actually mentioned in ancient scriptures as “Bhogavati”.
On the way you can find temples dedicated to Shankaracharya and Sarada Devi and if you are lucky you can also come across a puja (holy service) held here daily. Take your time to hike around the place, explore your own favourite spots and have a picnic spread underneath the trees along the pathway. If you appreciate the simple life, this place might just become your favourite spot around Srisailam!
