The name Kusadasi means ‘the pigeon island’. It is so called as there were many pigeons which came here during olden days. The Kusadasi Fortress covers the whole island that floats in the middle of the sea. The castle is covered with trees on all sides and from far away the tall tower can be seen. It is like a fairy tale castle that is deserted now. The castle was built during the reign of the Ottoman Empire mainly to protect the sea trade from the attacks of the pirates. Another purpose was to protect the town from the attack of sea invaders. A walk along the area of the Fortress of Kusadasi is a beautiful experience. The view of the sunset from here is amazing. After you finish your stroll and you are tired just take a table in a restaurant here and feed yourself with the delicious crumbed calamari and drink the beauty of the surroundings
