The Senbon Shakado temple was built in the year 1227 and its main hall (Shaka-do) is considered to be the oldest hall in Kyoto.

Trivia: In the temple’s premises, you will find a shrine dedicated to Okame who was the wife of the head carpenter who built the main hall. During the construction, the carpenter made a mistake and the structure started looking haphazard. It was then that Okame came up with a solution and rectified her husband’s mistake. Unfortunately, she later committed suicide fearing that her husband would lose face if anybody found out about his mistake and her solution. This shrine is now worshipped by people from the construction field as well as carpenters.
