The Mount Hiei is a mountain popular with hikers and trekkers. A hike to the top provides beautiful panoramic views of the city and the countryside. If you are not into trekking and hiking, no worries, a toll road provides access by automobile to the top of the mountain. Alternatively, there are buses that connect the mountaintop to the city few times a day. There are also two routes of funiculars (the Eizan Cable and the Sakamoto Cable) that you can travel by. The mountain comes alive with azaleas in spring and Japanese maple trees in the fall and is home to UNESCO World Heritage Site Enryaku ji Temple which is situated at the top.
