Coco Loco Art Studio And GalleryCurrently Open
The Coco Loco Art Studio & Gallery is a fair trade workshop and gallery which houses the works of local craftsmen, focusing specially on Costa Rican indigenous culture. Coco Loco is also the exhibit of the owner and artist Ruth Deiseroth-Kweton, whose studio is adjacent to the gallery. Here you will find many handmade paintings, by Ruth as well as other talented local craftsmen, to take home as souvenirs.
The Coco Loco Art Studio has a huge variety of artefacts, ranging from paintings, wall-hangings and custom made mirrors to palm frond masks, wooden masks and even some very interesting mixed media. Many of the local artisans also specialize in different arts, like ceramics, vases, traditional Costa Rican masks and weapons.
Ruth’s website also has a number of Coco Loco creations available online, created by all the artists of the studio, including herself. Here, you can find something which you may have liked but weren’t able to pick up due to size or price, and you can order it at any time and have it shipped to your location. The studio has been covered on Costa Rican national television, and it is a big step in helping the artists of La Fortuna and other nearby places thrive.
Places like Coco Loco Art Studio & Gallery, along with Souvenir Leo, are very important for the preservation of cottage industries like handicrafts in Costa Rica. Most places have their own souvenir shops, where all the items are mass produced, sometimes even outside Costa Rica! However, Coco Loco Art Studio & Gallery is an initiative to support the local artists and keep their trade going, and every tourist should do their bit in supporting the cause.
