La Fortuna de San Carlos, Arenal Volcano National Park, Costa Rica
Lake Arenal is a marvellous lake that sits on the bottom of the Arenal Volcano near La Fortuna de San Carlos. At 33 miles wide, with a depth of 200 feet, it is a truly massive spectacle. The rolling hills surrounding the lake, coupled with the looming Arenal Volcano in the background, provides for perhaps one of the most breath-taking photo opportunities of the vacation.
In 1979, Lake Arenal was expanded as part of a massive hydroelectric project. As a result, two small towns were actually relocated further north to make way for the lake to be formed. Today, it forms a major part of Costa Rica’s economy, providing 12% of the country’s total electricity. However, that doesn’t deter scores of visitors from coming to the lake every day, which is popular for water sports due to the steady supply of strong winds. The lake is considered to be one of the world’s best locations for windsurfing and sailboarding, something you should totally consider during your time there.
For those who wish to have a little more of a relaxing time at the lake, they can simply have a picnic on the shore, which is surrounded by hills that are perfect for an idyllic evening getaway with the family or your significant other. You can even go fishing, as the lake is swarming with rainbow bass- large fighting fish- quite the conquest if you manage to snag one!
Before you go to Lake Arenal, there is one thing you must know. Whether you’re a photographer or not, don’t forget to bring your camera for this one. If, by any chance you don’t do so, chances are you’ll have a look around and highly regret it!

The Go Adventure Park is a multipurpose theme park in La Fortuna de San Carlos. Here, you can enjoy many different adventure sports like Rappelling, Motocross, Horse Back Riding, Hiking, Bird watching and a whole lot more.
The Go Adventure Park aims to be a place of wild entertainment, but still retain the Costa Rica touch in it. For this reason, it isn’t a regular theme park with colourful signboards, but instead is made to allow nature to stand out. There is even an authentic tribe visit available, where you go to a small Maleku village and interact with the people there. It is indeed a surreal experience, as the people of the tribe have lived away from civilization for a long time, and it is fascinating to observe their behaviour and customs.
Horseback riding is available for people who haven’t sat on a horse before, and the staff are very helpful and patient with all newcomers.
There is a dirt track for Motocross riders, where you can watch professionals do stunts and tricks on their bikes, or have a go yourself.
There is a canopy tour similar to that of the Ecoglide Park, which has lesser cables but is as much of a thrill.
If you want a one stop for adventure when you go to La Fortuna de San Carlos, the Go Adventure Park is the place for you.

The Arenal Oasis Wildlife Refuge is a lodge cum ecological farm, which has many attractions for wildlife lovers. Situated just ten minutes from the La Fortuna town centre, Arenal Oasis is famous for its rustic and old fashioned charm, which makes its atmosphere truly unique. If you’re looking for a homely, warm experience in the place you stay, then Arenal Oasis Wildlife Refuge is definitely the place for you.
The Arenal Oasis Wildlife Refuge is essentially a no nonsense, unassuming take on hospitality, where they believe that all natural things must be authentic. The Night Walk at the Arenal Oasis is by far one of the best available in La Fortuna, as they are conducted by excellent tour guides who follow a lovely path down the woods where you can see a lot of rare animals.

The bird watching tour is even more impressive, with a staggering 200 species on display. These include migratory birds according to season, and range from big birds to small, including Toucans, Honeycreepers, Robins, Parrots, FlyCatchers, Antstrikes, Manakins and a lot more.
Although there are very few eateries nearby, the restaurant at Arenal Oasis is very good itself, and cooks up a number of delicious dishes at your request. All in all, it is a lovely place to visit for a few hours, but should you decide to stay back for the night, you wouldn’t be disappointed.

The difference between Cabalgata Don Tobias and Centaura is that while Centaura is a farm that emphasizes on the beauty and power of the horses they own, Cabalgata Don Tobias is more of a leisure stroll, and its main aim is to appreciate the natural beauty around the base of the Arenal Volcano on horseback. People who have done the tour will agree that sightseeing is quite different on a horse, as it provides us with a fresh perspective to the environment around us.
The entire route has been constructed on a private cattle farm, on the slopes of the Volcano. The route passes through untouched creeks and the lush rainforest. Riders will be able to observe several herds of sheep and cows on their route, while they marvel at the fantastic view of the La Palma Valley as well. Cold refreshments, made in the farm itself, are served to every rider, while they can relax on the terrace and take it all in.
They have their own restaurant, Benedictus Organics. Riders receive a hot beverage, agua dulce, and fresh corn tortillas with fresh cheese made every day on the farm. Visitors can even make their own corn tortillas and cheese.
The routes are flexible, and can be adjusted according to the group’s wants and needs. All you have to do is ask.
The route takes you close to the La Fortuna waterfall, where you can alight for photographs and take a quick break if you like.
The Cabalgata Don Tobias is a perfect place for a relaxed, tranquil horseback ride. If you don’t want to do too much walking, but still want to have a look around the beautiful foliage around the volcano, there is no better way to do so than this.
