Located only a short distance from Tarragona, the Pont del Diable is a historic bridge that was built as a part of the Roman aqueduct. In the 18th century, the aqueduct provided water to the ancient city of Tarraco (now known as Tarragona). The bridge is believed to date back to 1st century BC (during the reign of emperor Augustus) and extends for 249 metres. It sourced water from the nearby Francoli river and proved that the Roman aqueduct system worked flawlessly no matter in which age or period it was used.
The city keeps its Roman history alive by preserving original Roman structures and the Pont del Diable is an excellent example of just how progressive the Romans were in technology and civilisation. The bridge consists of 2 layers of arches that stand tall at a height of 90 feet. The upper layer consists of 25 arches that stand on a lower tier that has 11 arches. Even though it is built with mortar, its construction stays strong even today. Visitors come here to walk along the specus located on top of the bridge and to admire the view that it holds. At night, the entire stretch of the aqueduct is lit up and is a piece of art for those who seek it!
