The tower cannon fort was built to complement the Royal Tour’s defence of Toulon Harbour (since the harbour entrance was 1390 metres wide, and the maximum range of artillery was only 1000 metres). The walls of the fort are about 4 metres thick… and the real deadly intent of its size and location hits when you’re actually standing next to the cannons on top, staring out over the view of the magnificent harbour. Today the fort operates as a national landmark and as a maritime museum that chronicles some Toulonese history and that of its overseas territories.

The fort also has a small but very well maintained and charming botanical garden; its plants are thematically arranged aroundaromatic, Australian, cacti, exotic, aquatic, Asian, medicinal, food, citrus and industrial.
