They call themselves a beauty farm, where your relaxation is customised. There is massage in four types – thermal, hot stones, four hands and Pinda Swedana. There is a sauna. Reflexology (foot massages) and facial treatments here are supposed to be awesome. They use a lot gimmickry in all this – at the very least, you should come away with a feeling of having seen something exotic. And of course, they’ll do up your hair and trim down your nails.

Piazza Cavour, 19121 La Spezia, Italy

Found in the Piazza Camillo Cavour in the old town, this shaded market serves up some wonderful food. The fishmongers always have a fresh catch, and the farmers always have a fresh crop. Flowers and cheeses and meats here are just as good. The people here, both traders and tourists are very lively. In fact, this is the best place to get to know La Spezia’s spirit. The area itself is pedestrians only, which makes for a very peaceful place.

Sigillography, or the study of seals, is an obscure but fascinating subject – and this museum is the best place to explore it. The neo-Gothic building hosts the most comprehensive collection of this type there ever was, collected from every country and every age imaginable (the exhibitions are thus arranged chronologically and then geographically). It is a result of thirty years of research. The oldest seal in their collection is more than 4000 years old! The collections, whether Egyptian, Roman, Anglo-Saxon or Chinese are unexpectedly beautiful.
