Wheatland was the residence of President James Buchanan for nearly twenty years in the 19th century. Buchanan died in a room on the second floor in 1868. The house as declared as a National Historic Landmark in 1961 and is now under the protection of the Lancaster Campus of History. Daily tours take place for visitors. Guides educate people on the life of President Buchanan before and after he became politically influential. The house has been restored to its 1856 image when the President lived here while campaigning for office. Displays in the mansion include political memorabilia, Buchanan's personal artefacts, objects owned by the Buchanan family etc. Prior to the tour, a short introductory film is shown to the audience.

Wheatland , Lancaster Reviews - Write a Review
My sister and I love history and visiting these types of houses. Even though the set-up is smaller than others, we were really impressed with our tour guide. We went on a Monday, and the man who did our tour was very interesting and knowledgeable. The museum was very small, and not really worth the extra $5, but I was happy to have paid it after going on the tour of the house. The information he gave us about president Buchanan was very interesting.
Outstanding! If you are a fan of history, this is a must see. Visitors can explore the grounds at their leisure but are not allowed to tour the main home on their own (tours are offered on an hourly basis). My docent possessed so much knowledge of Buchanan and his immediate family. Plus her enthusiasm to share this wisdom with the group made the tour all the more enjoyable. I learned a lot about the 15th president.
This place exceeded my expectations. The house and almost all the furnishings are original right down to the Limoges china in the dining room. Surprised to find that Harriet Lane has a personal friendship with Queen Victoria white her uncle was ambassador to the Britain. Very well maintained with beautiful grounds surrounded by a leafy neighborhood. Highlights are an 1827 Madeira bottle and refurbished carriage in the visitor's center. Highly recommend.
Great tour of the house. Very knowledgeable docent. I learned a lot about the 15th President of the United States.
Excellent tour. It was a very intimate feeling visit to the home since you were allowed to enter the rooms with the tour guide. Beautiful grounds. Interesting museum.
