The Boyd Big Tree Preserve Conservation Area covers close to 950 acres of area and is named after Alex Boyd who donated the area to the state in 1999. The park occupies a part of the Blue mountain which in turn is part of the Ridge-and-Valley Appalachians. There are 8 trails that cover the conservation area- Coach trail, Creek trail, East loop trail, Janie trail, Upper Spring trail, Lower Spring trail and the Pond Loop trail. Carry a map with a coloured pathway trail and you can stick to your favoured trail as per your ability and experience. The easiest trail is a good option for first time hikers.

The area is home to a variety of wildlife including black bears, white-tailed deer, grey squirrels, warblers, bluebirds, wild turkey and grouses. Every year hawk migrate here that can be spotted form the observatory on the Blue mountain. Except for killing groundhogs, the area is popular for being a hunting ground as well. In late July and early August, the flowers bloom and attract butterflies-covering the whole area into a burst of colours.
