In the Isle of Purbeck, Winspit is a disused quarry situated near the cliffs of Worth Matravers. Until 1940, the quarry was used for collecting stones for the construction of buildings and cottages. During Second World War, air and naval army used Winspit to take shelter and the caves were made accessible by the public after the conclusion of the war. Later, Winspit area and its stone-aged caves have been used to shoot several scenes of popular Hollywood films. Recently, most of the caves of Winspit have been closed off for the safety of the public and for the conservation of the bats and wildlife.
