Built in 1994, the Waterwheel Garden is located on the Binhe Middle Road in the Lanzhou city. Spread over an area of 14,500 square meters, the Waterwheel garden comprises of two waterwheels, one cofferdam, a house of water mill and a recreation area. Lanzhou is the only city through which the Yellow River flows, thus the city is renowned for its irrigation machines.
The Lanzhou waterwheel became famous instantly after its invention, in ancient China and by 1950’s; the city gained a reputation as the ‘City of Waterwheel’. The Waterwheel garden was built in honour of the invention of this ancient irrigation instrument. On a visit to the garden, you can enjoy the revolving historical waterwheels over a cup of tea, while getting an insight into the irrigation tools of the ancient China.
