Spread over the area of 4.5 hectors, Isla Cachagua Natural Monument, or the Natural Heritage Site Isla Cachagua is a natural monument that was started in the year 1989. The climate here is warm temperate and is dominated by winter rains, prolonged dry season and cloudy days. One of the most important animal species living here is the penguins, predominantly the Humboldt and Magellanicus species.   • I understand that the penguins are not always there due to migration patterns. We went in late December 2011 and saw hundreds, maybe thousands, of penguins. We hired a fishing boat to take us around the island (you cannot go onto the island as it and the penguins are protected). We got close enough to get amazing photos (from the boat) of penguins and birds. We hired a fishing boat from Zapallar to the island and back. I recall it took about 40 minutes each way and about 1 hour taking photos. It was an unforgettable experience!
