As you enter the city of Le Mans, France, you will be greeted by a glorious abbey. Abbaye Royale de L'Epau that stands tall at the gates of the city, dates back to 1229. Originally a Cistercian abbey, it was established by Queen Bérangère. Today, it is of great historical importance as it has lived through both the wars, and served royalty prior to that. The tale of the exiled queen finding solace in this abbey still inspires people, and tourists make it a point to visit it to know more about her, her rule and her life. It is said that she built this abbey for her own protection and security, and eventually, towards the end, she wished that she be buried right at the heart of this building. Till date, the exact place of burial is not known, but beautiful sculptures dedicated to her decorate the corridors of this abbey. The dormitory and chapter room are two places which showcase impeccable architectural design. Decorative pieces adorn the entire building, like, arcatures, the refectory door, parlors, wrought iron stairs, rosette and frescoes. The murals tell stories in the most peaceful manner, and as you walk through the abbey, the various photos add information to the picture. For history lovers and artists, this masterpiece is definitely worth a visit.

It has a huge garden. A must see in autumn.
