Shanti Stupa - Review

Twilight is divine from this elevated spot, three miles from Leh. Whether sunrise or sunset, the changing light brings mystic beauty to the panorama of mountains surrounding the Stupa. The striking structure owes its remarkability to both; it’s isolation and its design. It was designed by a Japanese, and thus is greatly different from the orthodox Ladakhi structures.

This relatively new Stupa was built in 1991. The current and 14th Dalai Lama, who still visits often, himself enshrined the relics of the Buddha that are now housed there. The Shanti Stupa is a symbolic memorial depicting the completion of 2500 years of Buddhism in the world. Visitors can enjoy a brief interlude at the meditation room between climbing to the Stupa and photographing the surrounding mountains.

Shanti Stupa, Leh Reviews

  • Amazing place where one can view the whole Leh town from the top. Also amazing views of mountains with shades of sunlight on them, especially at Sunset time. There are two ways to reach on top, by climbing stairs (around 500 steps) from the front & vehicle way (road) from back.

  • One of the best tourist spot in Leh. I must say visit this place by foot rather than taking cab or anything else. And remember to make Timelapse from top of this tourist spot. Please keep this place clean and try not to make noise while you are in meditation room. Others might get disturb.

  • You get to see an amazing view of Leh from up there. There is a cafe just where the stairs end and you can sit and drink tea or coffee with some Maggi on side. Really an amazing feeling

  • Very nice and spiritual place. The whole leh city can be watched from the top here. The landscapes are awesome from here.

  • Shanti stupa is one of the place in leh which gives you the entire bird eye view of the city. Please remember to visit the place in the evening preferably at the sunset time only. There is a small restaurant at the entrance. Do not miss to visit this restaurant. It has a beautiful view.
