Shey Monastery or Gompa are the structures which are located on a hillock in Shey. The monastery was built in 1655 by Deldan Namgyal to commemorate the work of his father Singye Namgyal. In this monastery, you will be enchanted by the gilded golden statue of Shakyamuni Buddha. The statue is claimed to be the second largest statue in Ladakh. The surrounding walls of the Buddha’s statue display sixteen arhats. Two seasonal festivals – “Shey Doo Lhoo” and “Shey Rupla” are held in the monastery. Various cultural events and traditional dance performances are arranged during the festivals. It is believed that women who have no children come to this monastery to seek special blessings from Lord Buddha.
