This is one of the top tourist destinations in Lewes. The Zwaanendael Museum was created to honour the 300th anniversary of Delaware's first European settlement - Zwaanendael, who came here in 1631. The museum building models the City Hall in Hoorn, the Netherlands and features many Dutch elements like stepped facade gable, terra cotta roof tiles, carved stonework, and decorated shutters. Exhibits include local history, shipwrecks, and lighthouse representing the history of Sussex County.

  • Small but focused museum chronicling the history of the area. I was unaware of the Dutch influence here and found the information interesting. Exhibits on the local railroads and sunken vessels off the coast provide context that this area is more than just a place for a beach vacation.

  • The Zwaanendael Museum is a great little Museum filled with amazing history and artifacts from the Town and surrounding areas. The stall and Volunteers were very friendly and very informed about the area and its history. They relayed their love for the area and their bountiful knowledge to us in a easy and fun way.

  • Very educational. VERY helpful staff and knowledgeable. Will return again when in Lewes

  • Very interesting place. I learned a lot talking to the staff. The displays were set up offering interest. The whale bone was cool and they have a table with actual artifacts that one can handle and check out with a magnifying lense. A free, air conditioned must see in Lewes.

  • Small, intimate museum. Well presented. Lovely park on grounds. A gem. In heart of town n hard to miss. Be sure to stop.
