Lille Metropole Museum Of Modern, Contemporary And Outsider Art - Review

On the rolling greens close to Lille University, the LAM stands proud and elegant as the ordained 4th Museum of France. Before you even step into the museum, the sight of some magnificent sculptures scattered over the grounds greets you. 50 years of modern art (1900 – 1950’s) covering the Cubists, the Surrealists, and the Fauvists amongst others by such masters as Braque, Bernard Buffet, Andre Derain, Kansinsky, Paul Klee, Leger, Masson, Miro, Picasso and Kees Van Dongen form one of the best private painting collections in the country. The contemporary art galleries will take you through the art revolutions of the last half century. An unusual kind of art here is Art Brut – art that’s uninfluenced by any sort of cultural style whatsoever, and instead is a pure representation of the artist. The museum has one of the largest collections of Art Brut in the world.

  • to the museum you need to go 6 stops by bus. At the stop there are no signs how to get to the museum. It is necessary to go back along the bus and descend the ramp down. Then turn left. The museum is very interesting. At 18 o'clock you should be outside the gates of the museum complex.

  • Excellent temporary exhibitions. Very friendly and helpful staff. If you have a Pass Transpole for the public transport you get a reduction in the price of the exhibitions.

  • Plenty of nice art to see. They have a super nice restaurant as well!

  • This museum is really worth a visit. It has a great permanent collection and fantastic temporary expositions.

  • I enjoyed visiting the L.A.M. modern and contemporary art museum and sculpture park at Villeneuve d'Ascq. The range of celebrated European modernists within the permanent collections - from Georges Braque and Fernand Leger through to Amedeo Modigliani and Pablo Picasso - are quite impressive, and the specialist section on Art Brut was also a welcome surprise. I thought the architecture of the extension wing where the Art Brut assemblages were displayed was a beautiful setting for showcasing "outsider art". My only disappointment - and this is quite a serious concern - was that my friend and I were followed around the galleries by security staff in a very uncomfortably close and over-scrutinous way, as though we could not be trusted to just stroll through the collections at our leisure. There were hardly any other visitors there anyway, so that type of hyper-surveillance was neither necessary, nor appropriate. Someone needs to give the staff there a little more diversity training to ensure that foreign visitors are welcomed as guests, and not made to feel as though our presence presents a problem. Galleries are designed for visitors, NOT to simply stay empty!
