Notre Dame De La Treille - Review

Inspired by a 12th century figure of the Virgin, the nobility of Lille decided to erect a Cathedral following the Gothic traditions of the 13th century. The building started in the late nineteenth century but it took almost a century for it to complete. Ironically, the very figurine for which the building was erected was stolen in 1959, and now a replica rests in its place. Noted for it’s beautiful stained windows, chapels featuring scenes from the lives of Christ, the Virgin and the saints. Immediately upon entering the church you’ll be lulled into tranquillity by the soft choral music as you wander among the chapels. In front of the church is a quiet square where on any given day you’ll find lots of people with snacks in their hands, spending time in quiet contemplation. The church is also the seat of the Bishop of the Archdiocese of Lille.

Notre Dame De La Treille, Lille Reviews

  • Very very nice and the atmosphere is inside is something! I visited the cathedral on Monday so there weren’t many people and the music played there just attracts you to sit down and move your eyes all over the interior! A must visit

  • Nice cathedral in Lille . Near to station and grand place . Not crowded , nice place to visit if you are in Lille . Arts and architecture are nice . Parking is available near by and lots of food shops next to the cathedral. Quiet and calm place . Choir is nice .

  • Looks modern from the front, but amazing inside.

  • One of the best attractions in Lille :) ten minutes walk from the central station. Pretty close to the city center. Sometimes local people are seating nearby and enjoying their time. Nice architecture and glass windows. Worth of visiting.

  • I like this cathedral better than the one in Paris mainly because it isn’t crowded and you can freely wander around. It has lots of chapels to look at and beautiful music plays in the background. The story of how this cathedral came to be is interesting too. Unlike other reviewers, I actually like the blend of old and new.
